What is Lion Dance?
The Lion Dance is a dance of happiness and celebration, as the Lion dances he/she scares away evil spirits bringing good luck and good fortune for the upcoming year. Some dances were to signify the opening of a business or a new Kung fu school, a wedding, or a special occasion. To have a lion bless you or your event is a huge honor. Kung fu and lion dance are practiced together as the stances (horse, forward, girl, cat) produce a solid base, strong mind, and physical conditioning. Kung fu stances are the foundation of the lion’s stepping/ footwork that connect movement. Our goal as lion dancers is to bring the costume alive by expressing emotions including exciting movement to be as close to a real animal as possible. The lion dance for many Kung fu clubs/ teams is an opportunity to showcase the quality of their skills, A reward for hard work, dedication, passion and commitment to their style/art.
The lion dance has grown and evolved over many years from practice, to demonstration, to competitions, it has become an all year round activity.
